A Spiffy Newborn Hat!

Spiffy Newborn Hat

By Spiffyniftyriffic

 I wanted to make a newborn hat that would be an easy to remember pattern so I could make as many as I would like without needed to look back to a pattern.  The hat comes with three ways to trim it, one with a ruffle, one with a front and back post double crochet stitch, and a picot edging trim.  The ruffle is more suitable for a girl but the other two can be gender neutral.  Gauge isn’t really a concern since babies come in all different sizes and the yarn is stretchy.  Fits  Newborns.  This hat isn’t meant to be flipped up but it doesn’t look bad if you do!

Materials

Size H crochet hook

Any worsted weight yarn.  I chose Red Heart and I Love This Yarn.

Blunt needle to work in ends

Pattern

Chain four and slip stitch into the first chain make to make a loop.

Row 1:  Chain 3 (counts as first double chain), 9 dc into ring. At the end of each row you will slip stitch into the top of the chain three to complete the row. (10 dc total)

Row 2:  Ch 3, dc into same stitch as chain 3, 2 dc into each stitch around (20 dc)

Row 3:  Ch 3, *dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch*, repeat from * to * around (28 dc)

Row 4:  Ch 3, dc in next stitch, 2 dc into next stitch, *dc in the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch* repeat from * to * around  end with two dc in last stitch (38 dc)

Row 5:  dc in each stitch around. (38 dc)

Repeat row 5, two more times.

You can add more rows if you need a longer hat, or you can add an edging which also makes your hat a bit longer.

Edgings

Ruffle Edge:  Chain 3, sc into next stitch, ch 3 and sc into next stitch around. Slip stitch into first stitch to finish.

Picot Edge:  *Chain 3, sc into 2nd chain from hook.  Single crochet into next stitch.  Sc into next stitch*  Repeat from * to * around.  Slip stitch into first stitch to finish.

Front&Back Post DC:  Chain 3, fpdc into stitch below, bpdc into next stitch, around.

Slip stitch into first stitch to finish.

Here are some photos to help out with these stitches.

Key:

Sl st = slip stitch

Sc = single crochet

Dc = double crochet

Fpdc = front post double crochet ( this is when you are working in the front of your work and inserting your hook into the post of the row below and making a double crochet)

Bpdc = back post double crochet ( this is when you are working on the back of your work and inserting your hook into the post of the row below and making a double crochet)

Ch = chain

    Hi, In row 3, do you really want us to sc 2, or do you mean dc 2?
